FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? Deutsche Bank said earnings fell 46 percent in the second quarter as the eurozone debt crisis hurt investment banking activity and revenue from trading securities.

Germany's largest bank said Tuesday that income fell at its investment banking division as fewer client companies came to the bank for its services helping them issue shares.

It also said that revenue from trading debt securities ? one of the investment categories most affected by the crisis ? was down. The company said that was partly due to the company taking "deliberately lower levels of risk" due to subdued trading volumes.

Net earnings fell to ?661 million from ?1.233 billion in the same three months a year ago.

Revenues were down 6 percent to ?8.0 billion. A major hit to revenue came at the corporate banking and securities division, where share underwriting and debt trading are located, falling by ?451 million to ?3.5 billion.

The earnings statement Tuesday was the first reported under new co-CEOs Anshu Jain and Juergen Fitschen, who took over from Josef Ackermann in May.

"The European sovereign debt crisis continues to weigh on investor confidence and client activity across the bank," it said.

European governments such as Spain and Italy are struggling with high levels of debt, and the prospect they might default or need bailouts has unnerved markets.

The earnings release added detail to an early release of a few numbers last week.

Again, ?We the People? do ordain and establish this constitution? ,? not the aristocrats like Alexander Hamilton who inhabited America at the time, but the rabble ? the people. And that government was not created to rule them but to provide for their common defense and general welfare. The American government was to be a servant of the common people, appointed by them to do their bidding.

The Constitution of the United States is not only the birth certificate of America, it is the defining document of what it means to be an American. The Constitution says that the government belongs to us. We made it and we control it. It does not control us. And if it tries to, we have the right and, under the Second Article of the Bill of Rights, the means to abolish it.

An American believes in what might be called bottom up government. He rejects the idea that top down government is a manifestation of the natural order of things. To an American, sovereignty resides in the individual and a government is nothing more than a tool created by a group of individuals to serve their common needs. Nor are the powers of that government absolute; they are vested in it by the People, and the People may, at their discretion, modify or revoke those powers as they see fit. Furthermore, the people whom Americans allow to operate their government are not free agents, but are democratically elected servants of the People subject to recall and to criminal prosecution.

This introduces an awesome (and to some frightening) concept. You alone are responsible for your wellbeing and for your mistakes. But you are also responsible for your success! Nobody but you did it to you, and nobody but you can do it for you. This mind set, unique to America, has been responsible for making Americans the richest people in the world. Though we comprise only a fifth of the world?s population, we own half the private automobiles in the world, we waste more food than many countries consume, and we take potable tap water for granted.

Personal responsibility is an awesome burden, but it is the most liberating burden in the world ? if you have the courage to be an American

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Standing on Israeli soil, U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of the Jewish state and said the United States has "a solemn duty and a moral imperative" to block Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

"Make no mistake, the ayatollahs in Iran are testing our moral defenses. They want to know who will object and who will look the other way," he said. "We will not look away nor will our country ever look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

The presidential election hovered over the speech. The Old City formed a made-for-television backdrop behind Romney, while some of his campaign donors listened in the audience.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was matter-of-fact and in keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv.

He did not say if he would order the embassy moved if he wins the White House, but strongly suggested so in a CNN interview.

"My understanding is the policy of our nation has been a desire to move our embassy ultimately to the capital (Jerusalem)," he said, adding, "I would only want to do so and to select the timing in accordance with the government of Israel."

His remarks on the subject during his speech drew a standing ovation from his audience, which included Sheldon Adelson, the American businessman who has said he will donate millions to help elect Romney to the White House.

Romney's embrace of Israel was on display earlier in the day when he met with Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and other leaders. He also visited the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, where he was mobbed by worshippers. In addition, Romney met with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

In his remarks, Romney steered clear of overt criticism of President Barack Obama, even though he said the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran "has only become worse" in the past five years.

In an unspoken rebuttal to Obama and other critics, Romney said, "It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from security nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war.

"The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," he said.

The former Massachusetts governor also stepped back from a comment a senior aide made a short while before the speech.

"We recognize Israel's right to defend itself," he told the audience. Earlier, the aide, Dan Senor, previewed the speech for reporters, saying that "if Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability, the governor would respect that decision."

Israel is the second of three stops on an international trip for Romney in the weeks before he claims the Republican nomination at his party's national convention in Tampa, Fla.

He flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Four years ago, then-U.S. Sen. Barack Obama also visited Israel as a candidate, part of a five-nation trip meant to establish his own foreign policy credentials.

In his speech, Romney said Syrian President Bashar Assad "desperately clings to power" in Damascus in the face of an attempted overthrow, but he did not call for his removal.

He noted that Egypt is now headed by an "Islamist president, chosen in a Democratic election. ... The international community must use its considerable influence to insure that the new government honors the peace agreement with Israel that was signed by the government of Anwar Sadat" more than three decades ago, he said.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but his stop in Israel also was designed to appeal to evangelical voters at home and to cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters released Friday showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel, noting statements the president has made about settlements and his handling of evident Iranian attempt to develop nuclear weapons.

Tehran is closer to developing nuclear weapons capability than before, Romney said. "Preventing that outcome must be our highest national security priority."

In a March speech before a pro-Israel lobby in Washington, Obama warned of "loose talk of war" that serves only to drive up oil prices. "Now is not the time to bluster," he said then. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and sustain the broad international coalition we have built."

It was unlikely that the day's events would settle the issue.

Obama's former press secretary, Robert Gibbs, told ABC's "This Week" that the administration has delayed Iran's nuclear program. The president has imposed U.S. penalties against Iran and worked to tougher strictures applied by other nations. There have been numerous published reports of a coordinated U.S.-Israeli cyberattack that caused damage to Iranian equipment vital to creating weapons-grade nuclear material.

Even so, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said before the speech that "all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota."

Whatever the reality, the administration has taken steps in recent days to reassure Israel of its support.

Most notably, Obama approved an increase in assistance to strengthen a missile defense system that is designed to protect Israel from rocket attacks launched from the Gaza.

Senor's comments caused a stir in the hours leading to Romney's speech, a reminder of the controversy that Romney had created a few days earlier in London.

He later clarified his comments in a written statement, saying that the candidate "believes we should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course and it is his fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded."

Pentagon officials have spoken publicly about the difficulty of such a strike and American officials have expressed concern about the destabilizing effect such military action could have in the region, even if carried out successfully.

First it was Kevin Youkilis. Then Brett Myers. Now Francisco Liriano is coming to the White Sox. If Kenny Williams' cell phone could talk, it would probably say, ?Stop. Leave me alone. I quit.?

But it can?t. Neither can Williams. The White Sox have been one of the biggest surprises in baseball with a 2 1/2 game lead in the AL Central, and this deal could best be described as a shocker. The main reason? The White Sox and Twins, longtime division rivals, actually made a trade with each other.

The last time it happened was 26 years ago.

It wasn?t that memorable either. On Sept. 3, 1986, the White Sox sent Kurt Walker to Minnesota for Pete Filson. Walker never played in the majors. Filson pitched in three games for the White Sox. Liriano was three years old, living in the Dominican Republic.

But now, he?s coming to the White Sox.

When I spoke with Williams earlier this week about possible trade targets, he hinted that not only was a trade possibly coming, but it might be something unexpected.

?You?d be surprised at some of the phone calls we?ve made,? Williams said.

Zack Greinke was his first choice. Williams apparently hounded Brewers GM Doug Melvin, trying to pry the pitcher away, but the two sides couldn?t come up with a match. Greinke ended up going to the Angels. Williams changed courses and landed Liriano.

We learned about the trade while on the air during White Sox Postgame Live. When I shared the news with Frank Thomas, his mouth nearly dropped to the floor. It was completely unexpected, just like the twists and turns of Liriano?s career.

As a rookie in 2006, he went 12-3, was named to the All-Star team, and looked like the next Johan Santana. Later that season he underwent Tommy John surgery. Some thought his career might be over. He mainly pitched in the minor leagues in 2008. He went 5-13 in the majors in 2009. He threw a no-hitter in 2011 (against the White Sox). This season he?s 3-10 and lost his last start ? to the White Sox ? giving up seven runs in 2 2/3 innings on Monday night.

So what can we expect of him? Nobody knows.

But we do know this, the White Sox now have a surplus of starting pitchers. Very few teams can say that. They have six healthy starters. If John Danks can come back (which is starting to seem unlikely), he would be No. 7. With Liriano, it allows Chris Sale and Jake Peavy to get extra rest between starts. Plus, if Mr. Fix It (pitching coach Don Cooper) can get Liriano back to his old form, or something close to it, the White Sox could have a steal on their hands.

AVONDALE, La. (AP) ? The USS Somerset ? the last of three Navy ships named for 9/11 attack sites ? was christened Saturday in honor of the passengers and crew of the plane that crashed before terrorists could reach their intended target.

Passengers of United Airlines Flight 93 stormed the cockpit and thwarted an attack on Washington, but the plane crashed in Somerset County, Pa., killing all 40 passengers and crew members.

"The men and women of Flight 93 ... thought they were going to San Francisco to work, to play, to learn; to live their lives in peace while others guarded them," said Navy Rear Adm. David Lewis. "Instead they found themselves in a war, on the front lines, in the opening battle. It was a new kind of war, one with new rules, maybe no rules at all. They had no preparation, no training, no guidance.

"And they performed superbly."

Flight 93 was hijacked after taking off from New Jersey. It crashed after passengers and crew, some alerted by cell phone calls from loved ones about the other 9/11 attacks in New York, decided to fight the hijackers. Investigators later determined the hijackers intended to crash it into the White House or Capitol in Washington, where the House and Senate were in session that morning.

About two dozen relatives of the passengers attended the christening at the Huntington Ingalls Industries shipyard in Avondale, a New Orleans suburb.

The Somerset is one of three amphibious landing docks named after the sites where planes taken over by terrorists crashed, killing nearly 3,000 people.

Its bow stem ? the first part of the ship to push through the water ? was made from 7.5 tons of steel melted down from the bucket of a huge coal-mining crane that stood near the crash site. It was there that miners hung a large American flag to serve as a landmark and to honor the dead.

The USS New York's bow stem was made with 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center. Steel from the Pentagon will be displayed in a small tribute room in the USS Arlington.

Mary Jo Myers, wife of retired Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, the 15th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, smashed a ribbon-encased bottle of sparkling wine against a sharp-edged breaker bar mounted on the hull.

The Somerset will have both a military and a humanitarian purpose, bringing supplies, power and equipment to disaster areas, Myers said.

The Somerset is the last Navy ship that will be built at Avondale, which is scheduled to close once the ship is delivered. Officials are trying to find a civilian shipbuilding or other industrial partner to keep it open.

"We encourage those who can keep the story of this shipyard alive to heroically give their all to achieving that goal," said Patrick White, president of the Families of Flight 93.

About 5,000 people worked at Avondale when defense giant Northrop Grumman Corp. announced in 2010 that it was spinning off its military shipbuilding division. That spinoff resulted in Huntington Ingalls, based in Newport News, Va.

The Pascagoula shipyard, which is to stay open, is working on two more LPDs and got a Navy contract Friday for a third.

About 2,600 men and women are currently working on the Somerset. Those numbers are "probably stable for the next few months," with layoffs coming as systems are completed, Irwin F. Edenzon, president of Ingalls Shipbuilding, said after the ceremony.

"Putting money in a Roth basically assumes you won't need that money for five years," says Keith Amburgey, a CFA and principal of Rutherford Asset Planning in Tampa, Fla. You can withdraw regular contributions (not conversions from a traditional IRA) at any time ? just not the earnings on those contributions.

If you expect to need ready access to all your money, you may be better off contributing those funds to a traditional IRA, says Amburgey. But if you can afford to wait the five years, the Roth is a great choice. Reason: Unlike traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs aren't subject to required minimum distributions at age 70 ?. You'll no longer be able to contribute to the Roth past that age, but your assets can continue to grow tax-free for as long as you want ? even if you decide to pass those assets to your heirs.

Some of you might be familiar with Sony's earlier struggles to successfully (and in a timely manner) deliver Google's Ice Cream Sandwich to a slew of Xperia handsets. And, as we all know, Android 4.0's no longer the freshest treat around, thus the Walkman maker will now have to answer all the Jelly Bean questions to come. The first one to do so was a resident Sony mobile expert on the company's UK Facebook page, revealing that the Xperia Arc S and the itty-bitty Xperia Mini Pro won't be receiving the latest and greatest OS from Mountain View. Meanwhile, he also stated there's nothing buttery in the works for the elegant Xperia S, though he did say "ICS should now be approved" for the device. Perhaps this is a sign it's time to start looking for an upgrade, no?

PLYMOUTH, Massachusetts (Reuters) - Outside a sweltering campaign office where the air conditioner was broken, Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown boasted to supporters about the reach of his re-election campaign against Democrat Elizabeth Warren, a consumer advocate and Harvard law professor.

"We're just everywhere," Brown said. "I guess Professor Warren is in Martha's Vineyard."

The message behind Brown's recent jab at Warren was clear: It was a knock on the island's reputation as a playground for the wealthy and a reminder that the pickup truck-driving Brown has cast himself as the working-class alternative to a liberal academic.

It was just the type of political dart that supporters of President Barack Obama have thrown at another Massachusetts Republican: presidential contender Mitt Romney, whose luxury vacation homes and reluctance to discuss his personal fortune have helped Democrats' efforts to portray him as an out-of-touch elitist.

In one of the most intriguing contrasts of the election season, Brown and Romney share a party, a home state and even some top advisers. Yet they represent different sides of the ongoing political wrangling over class and authenticity that has come to shadow the 2012 campaign.

The campaigns of the Republican presidential candidate and the incumbent in one of the nation's highest-profile Senate races seem as if they're working from the same playbook - just opposing sides of it.

Brown, who surprised many analysts by winning a special election to succeed the late Democrat Ted Kennedy two years ago in a state where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans three to one, emphasizes his humble roots, draws attention to his opponent's wealth and calls on her to release more information about her finances.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, has faced precisely that kind of assault from Obama, a Democrat who has made appeals to the working class - and raising taxes on the rich - hallmarks of his re-election campaign.

In trying to attract Democrats, Brown often brings up his willingness to work with Obama. Romney, meanwhile, bashes the Democratic president at nearly every opportunity, calling Obama a failure in dealing with the economy.

Caught in the middle of Romney and Brown's differences are their campaign staffs, who share advisers and whose offices are 1-1/2 miles from one another in downtown Boston.

It's not unusual for political consultants to advise candidates with differing messages during an election season, but the mirror-image strategies for Romney and Brown show how flexible their advisers have to be during this campaign.

The most prominent link between the Romney and Brown campaigns is Eric Fehrnstrom, a top adviser to both. Asked to compare the candidates, Fehrnstrom declined.

"I'd really prefer not to mix apples and oranges," Fehrnstrom said in an e-mail. "Scott Brown and Mitt Romney are two very different individuals with their own unique styles and different positions on the issues."

Joining Fehrnstrom as advisers to both Romney and Brown are Beth Myers, who is vetting vice presidential candidates for Romney, and Peter Flaherty, who like Fehrnstrom and Myers worked for Romney during his term as Massachusetts governor from 2003 to 2007.

For experienced political hands, having to push conflicting messages is a job requirement, other strategists said.

"As political consultants, it's our job to do whatever it takes to win a race," said Rob Gray, a Republican strategist who has worked with Romney's and Brown's advisers. "Sometimes, that gets us twisted in a pretzel in terms of logic or consistency."

Such strategic twisting by the Romney-Brown advisers has been evident as Obama's allies have pressed the notion that Romney, whose fortune is estimated to be up to $250 million, is hiding something by refusing to release more than a year or two of tax returns.

"There's nothing hidden," Romney told Radio Iowa this month.

Obama's strategy should sound familiar to Massachusetts voters.

Brown's campaign has taken a similar position, accusing Warren of failing to be transparent by refusing to release her tax returns from 2006 and 2007.

"She is clearly hiding something. What is in her tax returns during these years that Warren is so afraid voters might learn?" Brown campaign manager Jim Barnett said last spring, sounding a lot like a spokesman for Obama's team.

In one statement, Barnett called the Democratic contender "Millionaire Warren." Warren's net worth could be as much as $14.5 million, according to her financial disclosures.

The attention to Warren's wealth is the kind of talk that Romney, in defending his fortune, has condemned as the "politics of envy."

"Everywhere he goes, we hear him talking about millionaires and billionaires and executives and Wall Street," Romney said of Obama last winter. "It's a very envy-oriented, attack-oriented approach and I think it will fail."

As Obama's supporters hammer Romney for sheltering his investment income in ways not available to most people, Brown has similarly tried to cast Warren as being the entitled recipient of special favors.

Brown has accused Warren of falsely claiming Native American heritage to gain an advantage in education and employment applications.

Warren, a graduate of Rutgers Law School, taught at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and is widely regarded as an expert in commercial law. Warren maintains that she identified herself as Cherokee because her mother had said she was part Cherokee.

"I never asked for any advantage, nor received advantage in going to college, to law school, or in any job," Warren said last week.

Warren supporters are encouraging her to fight back by trying to link Brown with Romney, despite the differences between the two Republicans.

The more she talks about Romney the better, they said, hoping to prove that the political distance between Republicans Brown and Romney is not as great as it may seem.

"These guys are brothers in policy. I call them Bromney. Like the celebrity marriages," said John Walsh, chairman of the Massachusetts Democratic Party.

Brown contends that despite their shared staff, his campaign is quite different from Romney's.

"I'm not worried about what Governor Romney does," Brown said. "He's doing his thing, and I'm doing mine."

Human beings seem to be born with a gene for telling stories. Stories from our families, our communities, and the media form our worldview and shape our lives. In fact, scientists have discovered that our ability to create stories is intricately connected to our ability to learn. This is because our brains seek to create meaning through relationship, which is what stories do so well.

Our storytelling faculty comes into play not only when we speak, but also when we read, which means that our brains are unconsciously seeking a well-told story in every kind of writing--whether it be a business proposal, an academic essay or the Great American Novel. When a story connects with us, it can have a powerful effect on our thoughts and decisions. When it doesn't connect with us, however, it may leave us confused, bored, or even angry.

The question is: Why do some stories succeed while others do not?

Successful writers understand the architecture of a story b>

The answer lies in the architecture of a story, which at the most basic level requires a beginning, a middle, and an ending. The beginning needs a way to draw readers into the story and make them want to keep reading. The middle needs to tell the basic parts of the story in some kind of logical order so that readers can follow and understand it. And the ending needs to tie up loose ends, being sure to answer any questions that have been raised.

Successful stories are always targeted at a particular audience and use language and terminology the audience understands. They also use concrete details and strong, active verbs to add color, emotion and energy.

If any of these elements are missing from our written communications, we will confuse our readers at best and completely fail in our purpose at worst.

Let's take a book for example

When I am browsing in a bookstore and pick up a book, I usually look at the first paragraph. If something about the writing "hooks" me, I read further. If it doesn't, I put the book back on the shelf.

If I accidentally pick up a book in Italian--a language I do not know--I put it back immediately because I am not its intended audience. In other words, it literally doesn't "speak" to me!

Once I begin to read the book, I expect the author to lead me skillfully through his story, giving me as much detail as I need to understand and visualize his ideas. Sometimes, however, the author's plot jumps around so much that I have a hard time following it.

Sometimes the author's characters are so vaguely drawn that I can't keep them straight. The result is that I end up not caring about them at all, and I soon forget the whole thing.

Sometimes I get to the end of a book and find that the author has left me hanging, without tying up loose ends and satisfactorily answering my who, what, when, where, why and how questions.

As I experience each of these frustration s, there is a good chance that I will misunderstand what the author is trying to say, lose interest in his message altogether, or start becoming irritated with the author himself.

This is obviously not the kind of reaction any writer wants to engender. If you are writing business or academic communications, and are not a professional novelist, what can you do to ensure that your "story" succeeds?

One possible solution is to write your communication using the Story Spine technique.

Use the Story Spine to build your narrative

This technique, which is described by Kat Koppett in her book Training to Imagine: Practical Improvisational Theatre Techniques to Enhance Creativity, Teamwork, Leadership, and Learning, is especially good at helping writers build their narrative without getting lost. It consists of the following steps:

Once upon a time... Every day... But one day... Because of that... (Repeat as needed) Until finally... And ever since then... "Once upon a time" is your opening. It draws your readers into your communication in some way and introduces your setting and characters. By answering such questions as "Who?" "What?" "Where?" and "When?" it provides the context and sets the stage for your communication.

In the "Everyday" step, you present some background information and further develop your message.

The "But one day" step represents your catalyst. This is where you ask and answer such questions as: "Why is this message/idea important? What is different about it?"

The "Because of that" step represents the heart, or main section, of your story. It presents the consequences that result from your catalyst.

The "Until finally" step is the climax of your communication, where you present your most important points or results. It is what your whole communication has been building up to.

The "And ever since then" step is your conclusion. It is the place you tie up loose ends and leave your r eader with a feeling of satisfaction, of completion and understanding.

Concrete details make a story compelling

Ensuring that your story follows a basic structure isn't quite enough, however. You must also provide vivid, concrete details. According to Koppett:

Shakespeare's structure is strong. His "because of that's" flow from one to the other, building in intensity beautifully. But mostly, it is the language Shakespeare uses, the descriptions he employs, the way he develops his characters that makes his work a masterpiece. What makes a story compelling is not just what happens, but how it is related, the specific moments, the images and sensory impressions that are created.

So, again, we come back to our brain's need for meaning and connection. To ensure your writing succeeds, keep in mind that you are, in effect, telling a story. Ask yourself, "Has my story met my audience's needs and expectations?" If you can answer "yes" to this question, your results will show it.
