BRACAnalysis helps women with increased cancer risk avoid cancer

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- Stacy Chesser visits her gynecologist, Dr. Thomas Ray, on a regular basis.?? Chesser is the middle daughter in her family. Her sister, Kimberly Vernetti, made a disturbing discovery that dealt with family health history.?

"Kimberly had a knot on her breast, came into Dr. Ray. Two days later she got the results back that she had cancer," said Chesser.

That diagnosis shook the family to the core because breast cancer runs in the family. Vernetti's oncologist recommended a BRAC test for her, her sisters and mother.?

Dr. Ray explained what BRACAnalysis is.??

"The?BRACAnalysis is a test that screens for the?BRCA one and two gene. Essentially detects hereditary breast and ovarian cancers," said Ray.

He is very specific about what the test does and doesn't do.?

"It does not indicate that there is current cancer. But it does indicate that they may be susceptible at a higher risk than the general population over their lifetime," added Ray.

    So who should take it??

"This test would be ideal for anyone who has a family history of ovarian cancer or breast cancer," he said.

Chesser was the first to schedule the test and got the results two weeks later.??

"He explained to me that?I came back positive for both breast and ovarian gene and with that he gave me an 87 percent chance of getting breast cancer by the time?I was 50," she said.

Once the test results come back and if they are positive, the patient has a lot to think about. A very aggressive form of treatment could be surgery. Conservative treatments may involved medications.?

"I was through having my children and so?I went ahead and proceeded in three weeks with a complete hysterectomy. During this time, I've already been refereed over to a physician in Huntsville to where?I could talk to him about whether?I wanted to proceed with a double mastectomy," said Chesser.

Chesser's older sister tested negative, but their mom tested positive and also had both surgeries.

She said the?BRAC test is a blessing.?

"Mastectomy is a scary word. It scares everyone. But it's just body parts. You're still yourself. In hindsight, I've come out better," she said.

And now she's spreading the word so more women can try to avoid these types of cancer.

Hip hop manager Chris Lighty found dead: reports

(Reuters) - Hip hop manager Chris Lighty, who in the past handled careers of performers such as Mariah Carey and Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs, died on Thursday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot to the head, media outlets reported.

Music publication Billboard said it had confirmed the death through an unnamed source at Lighty's Violator Records & Management, which he founded and where he was chief executive.

The New York Daily News reported that Lighty, 44, was found dead in his apartment in New York City's Bronx borough from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Representatives for Lighty could not immediately be reached for comment.

Hip hop mogul Russell Simmons, for whom Lighty worked early in his career at Simmons' Rush Management, released a statement on GlobalGrind.com calling the manager "a hip-hop hero and one of its greatest architects."

"(Lighty) is an amazing example of how a passionate kid from the street can go to the most even-keeled, smart, thoughtful manager in the business and a generous philanthropist. He was loved by everyone who knew him, including me," Simmons wrote.

Lighty gained prominence through handling artists such as Mariah Carey, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot and Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs through his Violator company.

After Violator merged with Larry Mestel's Primary Wave Talent Management firm in September 2011, the company signed on to work with artists such as 50 Cent and Cee Lo Green on their branding and endorsements.

Billboard included Lighty on its Urban Power List earlier this year along with Mestel and Michael "Blue Williams" as part of the executive team of Primary Violator Management.

    Storm Stimulus

US-WEATHER-STORM An uprooted and fallen tree is positioned in front of a house blocking a road in New Orleans on Wednesday

Do natural disasters hurt or help the economy? Hurricane Irene, which briefly terrorized the East Coast last summer before fizzling, spurred a series of articles speculating on the potential stimulative impact of a hurricane on a depressed economy. Hurricane Isaac, currently battering the Gulf Coast, doesn?t seem to have had the same impact on economists.

Disaster economics is a subject worthy of more study. For starters, natural disasters really do seem to reduce unemployment. Hurricane Katrina led to a temporary surge in joblessness before reducing the unemployment in the New Orleans metropolitan area well below the national unemployment rate. Of course, it also killed almost 2,000 people and devastated a major American city.

The moral of the story isn?t that we should hope for storms, but that understanding why a disaster can juice unemployment numbers teaches some valuable lessons about the economy as a whole. Most of all it?s a reminder of how America?s current slow, grinding economic recovery could be improved.

The theory of hurricane stimulus is pretty straightforward. A typical recession starts with a brief collapse in private investment spending, often precipitated deliberately by a Federal Reserve interest-rate increase that reduces the profitability of investments. To end the recession, something needs to fill the gap. That could be a surge of public investment, as during a wartime military buildup. In small open economies, a drop in the value of the currency can boost net exports and make investments in domestic production look more attractive. In the United States, an interest rate cut usually serves to break a recession: Cheaper money makes the marginal investment look more profitable, boosting investment spending. But there are other ways of increasing the marginal return to capital. A major technological breakthrough, for example, can spur a surge of investment as everyone rushes to build new fiber-optic cables or telephone lines or factories that build toasters or whatever the state of the art may be.

And a less pleasant way of stimulating investment is to destroy a bunch of existing capital goods. It sounds a bit crazy, but it makes sense. Right now, nobody?s building strip malls. The hangover from the real-estate bubble has everyone scared off, and the rise of digital technology seems to be spurring a structural shift away from big-box retail stores. But despite the sector?s problems, it?s not as if the strip-mall economy has vanished. Every American city continues to be chock full of shopping centers, mostly full of stores, mostly full of people buying things. Overall investment in the sector has declined because the growth outlook looks bad, not because shopping has vanished from the earth. But if a hurricane wrecks half your malls, suddenly that calculus changes and it?s time to build some malls.

Where does the money for this new mall investment come from? Insurance payments, in part. But more from credit. If the marginal return on investment surges?as it would if there were suddenly a need for a bunch of new malls--then lenders will happily lend.?

A hurricane isn?t the only way to create this new demand. The reason the American economy is slowly but steadily inching back to full employment is that even absent a huge disaster, stuff is always breaking. Capital goods experience ?depreciation.? A leak floods your basement, the UPS delivery truck breaks down, or your office building?s HVAC system needs repair. Given enough time, the return on capital will rise and investment will rebound. The problem with the agonizingly slow recovery is that it?s similar to hurricane stimulus?you?re counting on putting people back to work reducing the country?s stock of useful goods. ?The more our factories, offices, housing stock, and transportation equipment deteriorate, the more likely we become to build more in the future, but this deals a permanent blow to our prosperity.

The good news is that there are policy tools for boosting the economy that are better than a hurricane.

The federal government could and should be mitigating the downturn by undertaking public investments in the kinds of schools and infrastructure the private sector doesn?t build. We also should target the particular category of investment that?s most depressed?the residential sector. Residential investment is still stuck in a deep slump. One way to help would be for the Federal Housing Finance Agency to stop delaying the Obama administration?s efforts to streamline mortgage refinancing.

The Federal Reserve could do most of all. When a hurricane wrecks a bunch of houses somewhere, that leads to a surge in residential investment because there?s a localized shortage in habitable housing. Because the surge is localized, nobody thinks that the Fed will look at a local spike in rents, see inflation, and raise interest rates to cut off economic activity. But when a prolonged construction slump leads to a slowly growing shortage of rental housing, the picture is less clear. Since March, I?ve been urging the Fed to follow the advice of the president of its Chicago branch and make a clear statement that a bit of inflation is an acceptable price to pay to spark a surge in employment. It?s a dynamic we take for granted in the case of a hurricane. The destruction creates temporary local shortages of whatever?s been wrecked. But rather than responding to the shortage by stifling local demand, we get a surge of activity to rebuild what?s missing and restock depleted inventories.

The financial crisis and the destabilization of expectations it created was effectively nationwide economic hurricane, destroying property and economic value across the country. But neither Congress nor the Federal Reserve nor the federal housing agencies are stepping up to rebuild. If we treated real storms this way, severe natural disasters would lead to permanent depressions. It?s time to start applying lessons of hurricanes to the larger economy.

Maximize Your Business Leads with Facebook and LinkedIn ...

Throughout time, businesses, especially local-based operations, depended largely on what was known once as word-of-mouth that is now, in the full impetus of the online marketing generation, is known as networking.

Online networking basically comes in two formats ? either for business to business or business to consumer. Business to business networking can mean becoming a member of a local marketing Forum who offers to meet on a weekly or even monthly basis to discuss latest trends in the local business community.

Well most of the people at these meetings may not be involved in the same business; they will use these meeting places as an informal means of gathering local information that may result in contact and sales. In some cases networking forums of this nature may become national, multiplying opportunities to harvest leads.

As far as making contacts online with the same goal of lead gathering then one of the biggest mediums these days is undoubtedly LinkedIn, whose member base is growing at a tremendous rate. LinkedIn houses trade forums for every sector of business as well as for service providers covering every trade and industry sector. For any business, large or small, having an employee of two active on LinkedIn is a very worthwhile investment.

    facebook-linkedin

Tremendously larger in scale but on a similar theme is Facebook. It goes without saying that the networking possibilities on this media giant are totally unlimited. Geared towards the business to consumer sector, maintaining a Facebook page can bring tremendous opportunities and will generate a tremendous number of business leads. What must be remembered when launching a Facebook page is to be ready for the massive influx of potential clientele and remember that these leads will generally be one off in nature.

For business owners who are looking for trade in the consumer sector and find the prospect of dealing with Facebook just a little daunting, a little research may help them to find local consumer marketing websites where they can establish a presence.? The obvious advantage for any marketing company that finds such a niche is that they will be a big fish in a small pool instead of being one of many hundreds of thousands reaching out for a market which will probably be less than relevant to them because of the geographical distances involved.

When it comes to setting a marketing leads harvesting policy, companies should sit down and decide exactly what they?re looking for and how to go about it with the minimum costs and maximum effect.? Being able to identify where the best opportunities lie to harvest marketing leads will save a lot of time, money and effort.

Less chronic disease in store for fit 50-year-olds

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Fit 50-year-olds are less likely to get chronic diseases as they age than are couch potatoes, according to a new U.S. study.

It may seem like a no-brainer, but the study helps fine-tune our understanding of the link between fitness and healthy aging, researchers say.

"It has been known for decades that if you are more fit, you live longer," Dr. Jarett Berry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, told Reuters Health. "But it has not been clear that you have a higher quality of life, that you age better."

It's possible that fit people just delay the onset of chronic illness, for instance, and end up being sick just as long as their weaker peers. But that doesn't appear to be the case, according to the new research, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

"We see truly reduced chronic disease, rather than just delaying the inevitable," said Berry, who led the work.

He and his colleagues studied more than 18,600 healthy men and women, who had done a treadmill test sometime around age 50 to measure their cardiorespiratory fitness.

Using Medicare claims data spanning an average of 26 years, the researchers then linked the treadmill results to the rate of eight chronic conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and colon cancer.

Among men in the lowest fifth of fitness scores, the rate of chronic disease was 28 percent per year. By contrast, the rate was only 16 percent per year among the top fifth.

For women, the numbers were 20 percent per year versus 11 percent, respectively.

The findings don't prove that exercising more cuts the risk of chronic disease, because it could be that people with a lot of physical activity also eat healthier foods - something the researchers didn't take into account (they did account for smoking, alcohol use, obesity, blood pressure and cholesterol levels).

In a commentary, Dr. Diane Bild of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in Bethesda notes that there could also be genetic factors that predispose people to both fitness and health.

But she adds that, "Physical activity has a host of well-proven benefits, including effects on weight, cardiovascular disease risk factors, bone health and mental health."

Berry said even if genetics are at work, it doesn't mean exercise can't make a difference. He said national guidelines recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of high-intensity exercise every week.

The new study would seem to argue for more-vigorous activities such as jogging, cycling or playing basketball, he said.

"We know from prior literature that higher-intensity exercise tends to translate into more fitness," Berry explained. "Walking is clearly better than doing nothing, but if you can make the choice between walking and jogging, then jogging is probably better for you."

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac barely stirred Florida Keys residents from their fabled nonchalance Sunday, while the Gulf Coast braced for the possibility that the sprawling storm will strengthen into a dangerous hurricane by the time it makes landfall there.

It was on course to strike land on the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a powerful storm that crippled New Orleans and the Gulf Coast and became a symbol of government ineptitude. Forecasters expected Isaac to pass the Keys late Sunday before turning northwest and striking as a Category 2 hurricane somewhere between New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday.

The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane warning for a large swath of the northern Gulf Coast from east of Morgan City, La. ? which includes the New Orleans area ? to Destin, Fla. A Category 2 hurricane has sustained winds of between 96 and 110 mph (154 to 177 kph).

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal called a state of emergency and suggested that people begin leaving low-lying parts of the state. He also said he may skip a speaking engagement later this week at the Republican National Convention in Tampa unless the threat to his state subsides. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has also canceled his trip to the convention because of Isaac.

Elected leaders' vigilance toward tropical storms has heightened in the seven years since Katrina struck. Criticism was leveled at officials reaching all the way to the White House over what was seen as the federal government's slow and bungled response to the storm that killed 1,800.

An emergency declaration was also issued in Mississippi by Gov. Phil Bryant amid concerns of storm surge threatening low-lying areas. Oil companies began evacuating workers from offshore oil rigs and cutting production in advance of Isaac.

The storm was on a course to pass west of Tampa, but it had already disrupted the Republicans' schedule there because of the likelihood of heavy rain and strong winds that extended more than 200 miles from its center.

Even before reaching hurricane strength, Isaac caused considerable inconvenience, with more than 550 flights canceled at Miami International Airport and about 150 from Fort Lauderdale's airport. There were scattered power outages from Key West to Fort Lauderdale affecting more than 16,000 customers, and flooding occurred in low-lying areas.

Gov. Rick Scott said at a news conference Sunday evening that only minor damage was reported from Isaac.

Wind gusts of 60 mph were reported as far north as Pompano Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale. But while officials urged residents in southeast Florida to stay home, that recommendation was ignored by surfers and joggers on Miami Beach and shoppers at area malls.

In Key West, Emalyn Mercer rode her bike while decked out with a snorkel and mask, inflatable arm bands and a paddle, just for a laugh. She rode with Kelly Friend, who wore a wet suit, dive cap and lobster gloves.

"We're just going for a drink," Mercer said.

"With the ones that are brave enough like us," Friend added.

Along famed Duval Street, many stores, bars and restaurants closed, the cigar rollers and palm readers packed up, and just a handful of drinking holes remained open.

But people posed for pictures at the Southernmost Point, while at a marina Dave Harris and Robyn Roth took her dachshund for a walk and checked out boats rocking along the waterfront.

"Just a summer day in Key West," Harris said.

That kind of ho-hum attitude extended farther up the coast. Edwin Reeder swung by a gas station in Miami Shores ? not for fuel, but drinks and snacks.

"This isn't a storm," he said. "It's a rain storm."

With a laugh, Reeder said he has not stocked up aside from buying dog and cat food.

The forecast wasn't funny, however. Isaac was expected to draw significant strength from the warm, open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, but there remained much uncertainty about its path.

The Gulf Coast hasn't been hit by a hurricane since 2008, when Dolly, Ike and Gustav all struck the region. Florida, meanwhile, has been hurricane-free since it was struck four times each in 2004 and 2005.

Hurricane center forecasters are uncertain of the storm's path because two of their best computer models now track the storm on opposite sides of a broad cone. One model has Isaac going well west and the other well east. For the moment, the predicted track goes up the middle.

Florida Panhandle residents stocked up on water and gasoline, and at least one Pensacola store ran out of flashlight models and C and D batteries. Scott Reynolds, who lives near the water in Gulf Breeze, filled his car trunk with several cases of water, dozens of power bars and ramen noodles.

"Cigarettes ? I'm stocking up on those too," he said.

Forecasters stressed that the storm's exact location remained extremely uncertain ? a fact not lost on Tony Varnado as he cut sheets of plywood to board up his family's beach home on Pensacola Beach. With the storm's projected path creeping farther to the west, the Mandeville, La., resident joked he might be boarding up the wrong house.

"I'm going to head back that way as soon as we are done here to make sure we are prepared if hits there," he said.

Before reaching Florida, Isaac was blamed for seven deaths in Haiti and two more in the Dominican Republic, and downed trees and power lines in Cuba. It bore down on the Keys two days after the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, which caused more than $25 billion in damage just north of the island chain.

In Tampa, convention officials said they would convene briefly on Monday, then recess until Tuesday afternoon, when the storm was expected to have passed. Scott canceled his plans to attend convention events on Sunday and Monday.

At Miami International Airport, more than 550 flights Sunday were canceled. Inside the American Airlines terminal, people craned for a look out of one of the doors as a particularly strong band of Isaac began lashing the airport with strong rain and high wind.

Michele Remillard said she was trying to get a seat on a flight to New Orleans, well aware the city could be affected by Isaac later this week. In coastal Plaquemines Parish, La., crews rushed to protect the levees that keep floodwaters from reaching that New Orleans suburb.

"It's a little scary," said Remillard, who was in town for a wedding. "But I need to get home, you know? And if the storm comes my way again, who knows, I might have to come back here."

As of 8 p.m. EDT, the storm was centered about 530 miles (100 kilometers) southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Isaac had top sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph) and was moving to the northwest at 15 mph (24 kph).

Tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 205 miles (335 km) from the center, meaning storm conditions are possible even in places not in Isaac's direct path.

Fla. hurricane warnings issued as Isaac hits Haiti

Those considered most vulnerable were urged to move into an evacuation camp housed in a school building, but others with nowhere else to go were digging trenches to avoid the water. Haiti's population remains especially vulnerable due to the country's sprawling shanty towns. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Updated at 7:40 a.m. ET: Tropical Storm Isaac dumped heavy rains on Haiti on Saturday, threatening floods and mudslides in a country where hundreds of thousands of people remain homeless more than two years after a devastating earthquake.

Lashing rains and high winds were reported along parts of Haiti's southern coast and in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, where more than 350,000 survivors of the 2010 earthquake are still living in fragile tent and tarpaulin camps.

Intermittent power outages affected the greater Port-au-Prince area in the early hours of Saturday as Isaac bore down on the impoverished Caribbean country.

At 5 a.m. ET, the U.S. National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane warning for the Florida Keys, including the Dry Tortugas, the west coast of Florida from Bonita Beach southward and Florida Bay.

It also issued a hurricane watch notice for Florida?s east coast from Golden Beach southward.

The NHC also said the Bahamas government had issued a hurricane watch for Andros Island.

The NHC's notice at 5 a.m. said Isaac had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, down from 70 mph earlier Saturday, and was about 150 miles southeast of Guantanamo, Cuba.

    'Life-threatening flash floods'
The Weather Channel reported that bands of heavy rain triggered flooding in Puerto Rico through Friday, even with Isaac's center well to the southwest. A bridge collapse and mudslide was reported early Friday. Power outages were also reported. The U.S. Virgin Islands were also affected.

The Weather Channel said heavy rainbands on the cyclone's eastern flank were expected to continue to hammer Haiti and the Dominican Republic. ?

Follow Isaac's path with our storm tracker

Storm total rainfall of 8 to 12 inches is possible, with up to 20 inches locally, The Weather Channel said. Additionally, 4- to 8-inches of rainfall, with isolated incidents of 12 inches, was possible in Jamaica. ?

"Life-threatening flash floods and mudslides will likely result from that amount of rain," it warned.

Aid workers prep Haiti's tent city residents for Isaac's onlsaught

Isaac's march across the Caribbean comes as U.S. Republicans prepare to gather in Tampa, on Florida's central Gulf Coast, for Monday's start of their national convention ahead of the November presidential election.

The convention is still expected to proceed as planned but Gulf of Mexico operators began shutting down offshore oil and gas rigs on Friday ahead of the storm.

But the biggest immediate concern was heavily deforested Haiti.

With nearly 400,000 people still living in evacuation tents, a hurricane or even a tropical storm could lead to deaths and more damage to the already fragile country. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

On Friday, the government and aid groups evacuated thousands of tent camp dwellers but many Haitians chose to remain in their flimsy, makeshift homes, apparently out of fear they will be robbed, said Bradley Mellicker, head of disaster management for the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

"There's a lot of people who are resisting because they are scared of losing what little they have now," Mellicker said.

    Churches, schools are shelters
About 3,000 volunteers from the government's Civil Protection office were dispatched across Haiti, warning people about flood and landslide risks, and about 1,250 shelters -- schools, churches or other community buildings -- that have opened their doors to house people seeking refuge from the storm.

But Red Cross officials said the number of shelters could be grossly inadequate and Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe acknowledged Haiti had "limited means" to ensure public safety.

Red Cross and IOM representatives joined government officials in trying to evacuate 8,000 of the "most vulnerable people," including 2,500 sick and disabled, from 18 tent camps in low-lying coastal areas of Port-au-Prince.

Transcript of weather.com experts answering Isaac questions?

Many Haitians, most of whom scrape by on less than $1 per day, consider disaster an inevitable part of life in the poorest country in the Americas.

"We live under tents. If there's too much rain and wind, water comes in. There's nothing we can do," said Nicholas Absolouis, an unemployed 34-year-old mechanic at one camp for homeless people on the northern edge of the chaotic capital.

"There are still too many people living in the camps. There's a good chance that those might be destroyed with the passage of the cyclone," said France Hurtubise of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Haiti.

Flooding could also help reignite a cholera epidemic, which has killed more than 7,500 people in Haiti since the disease first appeared in October 2010, foreign aid workers said.

    Could hit New Orleans
On its current path, forecasters said Isaac would hit Cuba and the southern tip of Florida before making landfall anywhere from the Florida Panhandle in the northwestern part of the state to Alabama and as far west as New Orleans.

A tropical storm warning was issued for the entire coast of south Florida on Friday, and a hurricane warning also went into effect in the Florida Keys.

Party leaders are going ahead with their plans to host the Republican Convention in Florida, but GOP and Tampa officials have not ruled out the possibility of postponing the event if the storm poses a public safety risk. ?NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.

Isaac has drawn especially close scrutiny because of the Republican Party's convention, a four-day meeting during which former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney will receive the party's presidential nomination.

Party officials insist the convention will go ahead, even if they have to alter the schedule. But NHC meteorologist Rick Danielson said Tampa could potentially be hit by coastal flooding and driving winds or rain.

"There is still a full range of possible impacts on Tampa at this point," he said.

Danielson said it was very hard to project intensity before Isaac passes over mountainous Cuba on Saturday and Sunday and enters the Florida Straits. But the Florida Keys, the island chain off the southernmost part of the state, were definitely in harm's way.

    Reuters contributed to this report.

GOP panel ejects Maine delegates behind Paul

    TAMPA, Fla. ?

A group of Maine Republicans supportive of Texas congressman Ron Paul for president have been ejected from the state's national convention delegation.

The Republican National Convention's credentials committee voted Friday to replace 10 of the 20 delegates after determining their election as delegates violated party and parliamentary rules.

The dispute highlights lingering tensions between wings of the Republican Party ahead of the convention. In a peace offering, Mitt Romney's campaign has announced plans to air a tribute to the libertarian-leaning Paul during the convention.

According to a tally by The Associated Press, Paul won 177 delegates to the national convention.

Paul was not expected to address the convention, but his son, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, is expected to speak.

wordplay gush: Interview With Writer Sadie Smythe | Julie Gillis

I?m a big fan of my friend and Bedpost Confessions co-producer, Sadie Smythe. She?s not only got a great sense of humor, a brilliant writer, but she?s focused more on more on the absolute beauty of staying in the moment, connected, in every way. Here I interview her about her work around sexuality and sobriety.

    1) Tell me about your new consulting and speaking practice? I know you?ve always had a passion for education around sexuality, but what?s different about this?

My consulting practice stems from my personal experiences with non-traditional relationships ? specifically non-monogamy/polyamory/open relationships. As a writer on this subject for many years, I am often called upon to consult those who are experiencing turmoil within their own relationship structures (traditional or otherwise). I found that my perspective was deemed valuable by many people and so I decided to expand and offer it to whomever might be seeking guidance. I often find that it isn?t so much the relationship that needs re-setting or repairing, but the individuals themselves that just need a little insight on viewing situations differently.

My speaking practice came to fruition after I?d told my story at a couple of BedPost Confessions shows on my experiences with sex and how they were impacted by alcohol. I was approached by an alarming number of people afterward (men and women, young and not young) who told me that they had never had sex totally sober ? that alcohol had always accompanied their sexual encounters. This, plus some further research, enlightened me that our drinking culture has created a massive disconnect between people. Alcohol not only acts as a barrier to intimacy, but it also can inhibit us from making rational decisions surrounding our sexual health that can have psychological, emotional or physiological implications. I speak from experience here.

    2) What has surprised you the most as you?ve moved into this niche of human sexuality?

When I did my research, I discovered a study that indicated that 80% of first sexual experiences occur under the influence of drugs or alcohol. I am not sure why that surprised me as that was my own experience. But it scared me a little. Actually a lot. As a mother, I want my daughter to know the beauty of sex, and I want her first experiences to be authentic, engaging, and enjoyable. When alcohol impairment is factored in, so many things can go wrong. We actively preach and discourage teenage drunken driving, but there is a tacit acceptance of teen/young adult drunken fucking. This makes no sense to me. Our sexual selves are so vulnerable, especially in the beginning. I want everyone to understand that when those first sexual experiences are good, then the kids experiencing them are more likely to be set up to have fulfilling sexual lives. Whether or not we want to acknowledge this, it is important.

    3) Will you tell me a little about how connection and intimacy are related to sober consciousness and how you address that in your work?

Our culture teaches us that having a drink together bonds people, and in some ways it does. The practice of sharing a drink with someone creates an intimacy that can indeed be the precursor to a relationship. The same phenomenon occurs over tea. Coffee too. However indulging in tea and coffee isn?t going to make an otherwise responsible adult choose not to use a condom with the person they just met at a bar. There is a domino effect that can occur when you are experiencing temporary brain damage (which is, technically, what being drunk is). You may be having fun, but you aren?t completely present. You might not be totally present with your environment, with your partner, or even with yourself.

    4) What could someone expect from a session with you? Can you talk to us a little about the process?

I sit down with (in person, on the phone, or via Skype) with whomever I am consulting and I have them tell me a little bit of their story and what is it they want to work through. I listen actively and with empathy, and we essentially have a conversation much like one might have with an old friend. It?s rather casual in approach, and I often relate my own experiences if they are relevant (which they often are.) This is a very different style from traditional therapy, and is one I think necessary. If there is one thing I have learned it is that people want someone who truly understands exactly what it is they are going through to hear them. I can, and do, offer that perspective.

    5) Finally, how do we get in touch with you and start exploring sober sexuality?

SAIC Canada will continue helping a Canadian province implement and maintain an electronic health record system, the company announced Thursday.

The company won a prime three-year contract to provide technology and applications for Saskatchewan?s EHR system, associated components, other health information systems and related databases.

EHealth Saskatchewan, a crown corporation tasked with running the province?s EHR system, and the company have worked together previously to get the system running, said Steve Comber, a senior vice president and head of the health solutions business unit.

The $16 million contract with eHealth Saskatchewan is a single-award indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award, the company said.
