Hurricane Sandy Nonprofit Fundraising Relief Efforts Part 2

CSR, CSR Business, CSR Canada, Fundraising Services, News, Non-profit fundraising, Philanthropy | Elyse | December 7, 2012 at 12:01 am

In Part 1, I wrote about some of the celebrity nonprofit fundraising efforts in support of Hurricane Sandy?relief and today I am continuing with Part 2 by featuring more stars, organizations and media conglomerates helping to raise funds and spread awareness of the devastation that remains.

  • NBC-Hurricane-Sandy-Coming-Together-nonprofit-fundraisingI guess I?ll start with the first telethon in aid of Sandy held by NBC titled Hurricane Sandy Coming Together Benefit. The host of the Today Show, Matt Lauer, helped to organize this event, which was broadcast over all of the NBC Universal channels (NBC, Bravo, CNBC, E!, G4, MSNBC, Style, Syfy and USA) for one hour commercial free. Celebrities who participated included Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Sting, Aerosmith, Christina Aguilera, Jimmy Fallon and Billy Joel. That event was able to raise a staggering $23 million dollars for American Red Cross.
  • ABC followed with a ?Day of Giving? when all of their programming ? from Good Morning America to the late night Jimmy Kimmel Live ? asked viewers to donate to the American Red Cross. This fundraising initiative brought in $15,663,327. A plea to donate to the American Red Cross?was also made by American Idol judge Randy Jackson during the American Music Awards (AMA?s) which aired on ABC. In addition, ABC?s parent company ? Disney ? donated $2 million on their own to help Sandy victims with $1 million going to the American Red Cross?and the other $1 million assigned to other organizations working on rebuilding efforts. Also, Disney Employee Matching Gifts ? a Program of The Walt Disney Company Foundation ? will match donations made by all employees in support of disaster relief dollar for dollar.
  • MTV held a one hour fundraising special called ?Restore the Shore? on November 15th at 11pm EST. The cast of Jersey Shore along with stars from other top MTV shows including Awkward, Teen Wolf, Teen Mom, The Challenge and The Real World participated by calling donors to thank them for their donation. Stars contributing messages of support included One Direction, Mac Miller, Pharrell, Kim Kardashian, Ne-Yo, Bruno Mars, fun., the Jonas Brothers, All Time Low, Sean Kingston, Pink, Taylor Swift, Nikki Minaj, Simon Cowell and many more. All funds raised will go to Architecture for Humanity, which is setting out to help rebuild the famed boardwalk, local businesses and homes in Seaside Heights ravaged by the storm.
  • hurricane-sandy-seinfeld-quinn-CK-rock-nonprofit-fundraisingJerry Seinfeld and fellow comedian Colin Quinn have donated all revenue from their show in Brooklyn on November 8th and have committed to doing the same for their show in Staten Island on December 6th, 2012. They have also added a?Hurricane Sandy Benefit Show in Long Island on December 19th and will donate all proceeds to local Sandy relief efforts from that show as well. ?I grew up on Long Island and New York City is home,? Seinfeld said in a statement. ?This is a tough time for this area and we?re just glad to be able to help in the recovery.?
  • ?Comedian Louis C.K. performed 2 Hurricane Sandy benefit shows in Staten Island which raised over $150k for the Staten Island Hurricane Relief Fund.?Chris Rock was a surprise guest opener. According to SI Live ?Rock gave Louis CK a ride from Manhattan to the Sandy benefit show at the St. George and the two decided that Rock would open for him.?
  • Not even the National Hockey League (NHL) lockout stopped many of the league?s biggest stars from taking to the rink at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Nov. 24th in support of Sandy relief. Operation Hat Trick was a charity game led by Scott Hartnell of the Philadelphia Flyers and Brad Richards of the New York Rangers. It may have been an exhibition charity game but the roster read like an All-Star game. Team Richards included Bobby Ryan and Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks, Daniel Alfredsson of the Ottawa Senators, James Neal of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ville Leino and Taylor Pyatt of the Buffalo Sabres, Matt Martin of the New York Islanders and Mike Komisarek of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Brian Boyle, Jeff Halpern, Arron Asham, Dan Girardi, Marc Staal, Steve Eminger and Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers. The team was coached by Vinny Guadagnino from MTV?s ?Jersey Shore.? Team Hartnell included Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning, David Clarkson, Andy Greene and Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils, James van Riemsdyk of the Maple Leafs, Simon Gagne and Justin Williams of the Los Angeles Kings, Daniel Carcillo of the Chicago Blackhawks, Steve Downie of the Washington Capitals, P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens and Jody Shelley, Wayne Simmonds, Kimmo Timonen and Braydon Coburn of the Philadelphia Flyers. The team was coached by former Flyer tough guy Rick Tocchet. Team Richards won by a 10-6 margin and the successful event raised over $500,000.00 for the New Jersey Relief Fund and the Empire State Relief Fund.
  • On Thursday, Dec. 6,?Neil Young?and Crazy Horse will perform a special benefit concert for Hurricane Sandy victims at Atlantic City?s Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. The show, which will raise money for the?American Red Cross.
  • Last but certainly not least, a concert has been planned benefiting the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which is ?providing money, material and know-how to local organizations that are serving families and individuals in the regions hardest hit by the storm.? The ?12.12.12? concert is being produced and sponsored by Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, The Madison Square Garden Company and The Weinstein Company who also orchestrated the historic Concert for New York City following 9/11. Confirmed performing artists include Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Alicia Keys, Roger Waters, The Who, Bon Jovi, Dave Grohl, Eddier Vedder, Coldplay and Kanye West. The concert will take place at Madison Square Garden on December 12th, 2012 (hence the 12.12.12 title).

It is wonderful to see the creative efforts of celebrities giving their time and talent. Hopefully this commitment to raising funds will continue as long as the need remains. Given the magnitude of the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy donations are desperately needed to help repair and rebuild. As of last count, $244-million of the over $50 billion required for relief and recovery efforts had been raised. Please click on any of the event or nonprofit links above and contribute whatever you can. No amount is too small.

New names surface in South Florida football coach search

By JOEY JOHNSTON | The Tampa Tribune

Thursday brought new speculation about the University of South Florida's football coaching search, linking Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris and third-year San Jose State head coach Mike MacIntyre to the job opening.

The Austin American-Statesman, and later ESPN, reported that Morris had been contacted by USF and will interview today for the job. Morris once was a state-championship high school coach in Austin, Texas.

MacIntyre confirmed to the San Jose Mercury News that he had been contacted this week for other jobs, but wouldn't name the schools.

USF fired Skip Holtz, 16-21 in three seasons, on Sunday. Bulls athletic director Doug Woolard said he expected a thorough process and wouldn't comment until a new coach was in place.

Morris, in his second season at Clemson after spending one season as Tulsa's offensive coordinator, was given a six-year contract at an annual $1.3 million salary in 2011. He was a high school head coach in Texas from 1994-2009.

MacIntyre has unique Tampa ties. His father, George, was the University of Tampa's defensive coordinator in 1968-69 under Fran Curci, who said the younger MacIntyre later tried out for his inaugural Tampa Bay Storm team in Arena Football.

San Jose State (10-2) is ranked No. 24 in the Associated Press poll and opened with a 20-17 loss against Stanford. The Spartans have improved from 1-12 in 2010, MacIntyre's first season.

According to 247Sports.com, USF also has interest in former Miami and North Carolina coach Butch Davis, who is now a special assistant to Bucs coach Greg Schiano.

Earlier this week, USF speculation surrounded third-year Western Kentucky coach Willie Taggart, a Palmetto native. Taggart has not commented about any USF contact.

Ike's Bluff

Writer Evan Thomas's perceptive analysis of the 34th president shows a shrewd operator who played his cards close to the vest.

Ike's Bluff By Evan Thomas Doubleday

It?s been quite a year for the president. No, not Barack Obama. And not even Bill Clinton?s much-lauded speech at the Democratic National Convention.

The president who has had, perhaps, the most surprising year is none other than No. 34, Dwight Eisenhower. Continuing a recent reappraisal by historians, Jean Edward Smith published a well-received and largely admiring biography of Eisenhower in February. Now, as another campaign season has just ended, Evan Thomas offers Ike's Bluff, a perceptive analysis of the Republican president?s penchant for combining patience and secrecy to avoid nuclear war with the Soviet Union.

The central premise of Thomas? book is that the staid 1950s were anything but and, in turn, the grandfatherly, confused Eisenhower was, in fact, a shrewd operator who never let anyone ? including his son ? know whether he would use nuclear weapons. Maintaining inscrutability allowed Ike to avoid war at a time when the world?s two superpowers flirted with what later came to be known as mutually assured destruction.

Or, as Thomas writes of the man who first found fame leading the D-Day invasion of 1944, ?Ike was more comfortable as a soldier, yet his greatest victories were the wars he did not fight.?

Unlike Smith?s biography, Thomas opts against a full life story in favor of his presidency. And the book delves into a narrower topic than just the White House years, as its main emphasis is on foreign policy. Defense spending (it was Eisenhower, of course, who rued the ?military-industrial complex,? presciently so), diplomacy, occasional saber-rattling and plenty of CIA miscalculations proliferate.

Equally important, this history charts the personal ups and downs of Eisenhower amid the mounting pressures of nuclear threats. The warm, genial figure the public saw as their president simmered behind the scenes. Eisenhower had a quick-trigger temper and bore a series of ailments while trying to cope with the stresses of the presidency.

As commander-in-chief, Ike endured a heart attack, a stroke, and intestinal surgery during his two terms in office. The effects of international summits and various standoffs with the Soviets and others caused Eisenhower debilitating stomach problems and other sicknesses.

To be sure, Eisenhower was hardly a saint. He lived in a male-dominated world and could be cold to subordinates and family members alike. His dutiful wife, Mamie, once said, ?I have one career and his name is Ike.? Still, he loved her and, in many ways, relied on her, as well as on his personal secretary, Ann Whitman.

Ike proved too loyal and was loath to fire anyone. And the charge by many critics that as president he was often absent is at least partially true. Thomas recounts typical workdays of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a regular informal meeting with secretary of state John Foster Dulles. Eisenhower would indulge in a pre-dinner cocktail and spend his hours after dinner reading Western novels or painting. And, most days, he practiced or played golf, or both.

Mormon church wants more compassion for gays

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? The Mormon church has a new campaign to encourage its members to be more compassionate toward gays and lesbians.

Church authorities insist they aren't changing the Mormon teaching that same-sex relationships are sinful.

However, the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints says it wants to foster more understanding of homosexuality among Mormons and a more civil conversation about the issue.

The LDS church is making the push through a new website leaders launched Thursday.

Mormons faced intense criticism after church leaders helped fund the fight for California's Proposition 8. The 2008 ballot measure put in place a ban on gay marriage.

Church authorities said they were stunned by the backlash. Since then, the church has been trying to reach out to gays and lesbians to heal tensions.

British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) Says UK Economy 'Not As ...

UK economy and unemployment job centreThe British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has increased its forecast for UK growth for 2012, but still expects the economy to shrink. The UK will shrink by 0.1% this year, less than the 0.4% contraction it had predicted previously, the BCC said.

That is ?entirely due to the stronger-than-expected? growth in the last quarter, helped by the Olympic Games. But it now sees growth of 1% for the whole of 2013, down from the 1.2% it had forecast in September.

?As we wait in anticipation for the chancellor to deliver his Autumn Statement tomorrow, our new forecast highlights the challenges still facing the UK economy over the months and years ahead,? said John Longworth, director-general of the BCC.

?The fact remains that growth is still too weak. Thankfully, we have businesses here in the UK that are ambitious, determined and resilient.?

Chancellor George Osborne gives the Autumn Statement on Wednesday. Over the weekend, he admitted that curbing the UK?s financial deficit was ?taking longer? than planned.

The BCC said that public sector borrowing would be ?104.1bn for 2012/13 ? more than ?12bn higher that it had predicted in March.
?Many firms are expanding exports, investing, and creating jobs, but more must be done to support the aspirations of growing companies that will be the wealth creators of tomorrow,? Mr Longworth said.

Last month, it emerged that the UK economy had bounced back from recession in the three months to September.

The economy grew by 1.0%, after contracting for the previous nine months. The UK has still not recovered the levels of output seen before the financial crisis in 2008. For 2014, the BCC cut the forecast to 1.8%, from 2.2%.

The BCC said that the lower GDP growth forecasts for 2013 and 2014 were due to the fact that the ?international environment has worsened, as growth forecasts for world trade, for the eurozone, and for other major economies have been revised down in recent months? and that more spending cuts were likely in the UK.

Creative, organizational ? and totally predictable

10 hrs.

If your LinkedIn profile says you are "creative innovator with an extensive track record of effective organizational?problem-solving" then you might be a job-hunting cliche'. You also may be job hunting a bit longer than you would like.

LinkedIn, the social networking career website, on Tuesday released its annual list of the most overused buzzwords and phrases.

??Creative? tops the list among professionals based in the U.S. who used the website?s profiles in 2012. ?Organizational? and ?effective? were the next two most overused words.

But that doesn't necessarily mean that job seekers with these admirable traits (and who aren?t afraid to say so) should stop using these words.

?Focusing on overused words can often be?a missed opportunity,? said Nicole Williams, LinkedIn?s career expert. LinkedIn profiles ?are not one-page resumes,? she said. An online profile allows more space to better detail experiences and to demonstrate and quantify what job candidates have done by adding more skills.

?The more specific, the easier it is to find? a prospective employee, Williams said. ?Deeper dive? profiles are more convincing and effective than relying on commonly used words, as they set the candidate apart by providing concrete examples, using hard data and linking to projects that are unique.?

Other buzzwords that rounded out the top 10 among U.S.-based professionals include:?motivated, extensive experience, track record, innovative, responsible,?analytical and problem solving.

Using common buzzwords can sometimes be good, career experts said, but with qualifications.

?My immediate reaction is that I think anytime you use subjective terms or buzzwords in a resume, it is OK, but they should be backed up with documentary proof,? said Susan Britton Whitcomb, author of ?R?sum? Magic,? and president of the Career Coach Academy in Fresno, Calif.

??So what that you're creative?? What does that mean?? Whitcomb said, noting that a description that ?translates into ?saving money, making money, or saving time? for employers is the bottom line for hiring managers or human resource professionals.

Trudy G. Steinfeld, assistant vice president and executive director of New York University?s Wasserman Center for Career Development, agreed.

?I?m a big fan of LinkedIn,? said Steinfeld, ?but I think that for anything on a resume, you have to be able to back it up.? ?The way the job market searches are conducted today via electronic screening, certain key words and phrases are essential, but providing details that reinforce those words is critical. ?I can?t stress that enough.?

Job candidates writing resumes and online profiles should not only qualify key words but also use the opportunity to differentiate themselves. ?That is key,? Steinfeld said.?

Wendy S. Enelow, a career consultant and author of more than 20 books, including ?Best Keywords for Resumes, Cover Letters, and Interviews," said keywords are the backbone of any effective resume. "They should help you get the job. I don?t care that they are underused or overused.? In certain professions, she said, it is essential that particular keywords or phrases be used.

For example, if a recruiter is looking to fill a spot in an advertising agency, the word ?creative? or ?creativity? is appropriate. ?That word better be in. It should be overused. You haven?t helped yourself if you leave it out,? Enelow said. And a logistics professional would be expected to include the phrase ?supply chain management,? she said. ?I don?t care if every other logistics executive uses it, they could help you get the job,? said Enelow, who is also executive director of Career Thought Leaders Consortium, a think tank of career industry leaders.

However, she said certain soft skill words that reflect a candidate?s attributes, such as ?responsible,? might be more acceptable for a college graduate just starting a career with limited experience than for a 54-year-old senior level executive who has run a business, when such qualities would be expected. In that case, strong verbs, like ?managed? or ?directed,? would have more impact.

?I think that you have to use words that are appropriate,? Enelow said.

This is the third year that LinkedIn has issued its buzzwords ranking. Last year, ?creative?, ?organizational? and ?effective? were also the top three overused words. In the 2010 ranking, the first year the study was conducted, ?extensive experience? was the No. 1 buzzword. This year, LinkedIn noted, more members described themselves as ?responsible? and ?analytical,? which made an appearance on the ranking for the first time, bumping ?dynamic? and ?communication skills? from the list. ?Motivated? is now ranked higher than ?extensive experience,? the top buzzword in 2010.

The study also included the No. 1 buzzwords for other countries. Creative also was the top word in Australia, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore and Sweden. In Switzerland, the top overused buzzword was analytical; in India:?effective.

Health News - Drug shows promise in prostate cancer spread to bone

Tumors were reduced on bone scans, bone pain decreased after patients received cabozantinib

?

ANN ARBOR, Mich. ? A new drug demonstrated dramatic and rapid effects on prostate cancer that had spread to the bone, according to a study reported by University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers.

About two-thirds of patients treated with cabozantinib had improvements on their bone scans, with 12 percent seeing complete resolution of uptake on bone scan. Bone scans assess the degree to which cancer is in the bone; improvements on these scans suggest a response to the drug.

?The effects of cabozantinib on bone scans are unprecedented in the treatment of prostate cancer,? says lead study author David C. Smith, M.D., professor of internal medicine and urology at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Cabozantinib is designed to target two important pathways linked to the growth and spread of prostate cancer. The drug had the most effect on tumors that had spread to the bone, which is the major site where prostate cancer spreads. These tumors are typically very challenging to treat once they become resistant to hormone-based therapies.

In addition to the improvements on bone scans, 67 percent of patients with bone pain reported an improvement in pain control and 56 percent decreased or eliminated narcotic painkillers after treatment with cabozantinib. Results of the study appear in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

The trial enrolled 171 men with castration-resistant prostate cancer, meaning their tumors no longer responded to hormone-based therapies. The study began as a randomized trial in which all patients received cabozantinib for 12 weeks, after which patients were randomized to receive continued cabozantinib or placebo. The randomization was stopped early because of the dramatic effects on bone scan, and because patients receiving placebo saw their cancer progress much more quickly than those that remained on drug.

Among the 31 patients who were randomized, cancer progressed after a median 23.9 weeks for patients taking cabozantinib, compared with 5.9 weeks for patients on placebo.

?Discontinuing randomization is not common. Stabilization of disease in advanced prostate cancer is rarely due to the natural history of the disease and is in this case due to drug effect,? Smith says.

?While these initial results are promising, we are still uncertain how cabozantinib will impact the gold standard of survival,? he adds.

Phase III studies have begun at some institutions, and U-M researchers are conducting a phase II study to better understand the effect cabozantinib has on bone. This drug is not offered routinely in clinical care at this time. For information about prostate cancer treatment options or clinical trials currently open at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center, call the Cancer AnswerLine at 800-865-1125.

Prostate cancer statistics: 241,740 Americans will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year and 28,170 will die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society

Preparation for the Great Critical Incident: First Aid Emergency

By J.W. Caesar

Hosea 4: 6 (KJV) My people perish from a lack of knowledge.

Knowledge is power for survival when it comes to overcoming disasters. It is vital to get educated on how to survive in the event of a myriad disaster scenerios. Many people die or get injured because they did not adequately plan, prepare or mitigate for unseen emergencies. In order to win the war on disasters; American citizens must take disaster preparation seriously and strengthen themselves mentally, spiritually, and physically to overcome the challenges in the future.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency states on their website that there are actions that should be taken before, during, and after an event that are unique to each hazard. Each person or group should identify the hazards that have happened or could happen in their area and plan for the unique actions for each hazard. They further note that mitigation can be defined as actions to reduce loss of life and property by decreasing the impact of disasters.? What this means is??taking action now??before the next disaster?to reduce human and financial consequences later (analyzing risk, reducing risk, insuring against risk).? Effective mitigation requires that we all understand local risks, address the hard choices, and invest in long-term community well-being. Without these actions, people jeopardize their safety, financial security, and self-reliance and quality of life.

Building an emergency kit with first aid equipment and taking medical classes are best practices in mitigation that can assist in reducing risk and loss to families and the community.? It is important to analyze what type of hazards would affect the community during a disaster, as well the decision to shelter in place or evacuate to a safe location.? By following this risk analysis process, it would help clarify what type and size of container or bag to place first aid items inside, the quantity, what too and what not to pack, where to pack it, the environment, hazard scenario and number of people it can provide care too. Your first aid kit or emergency supplies should be designed around an all hazards approach that insures against the risk of not being able to treat or prevent hazards from overtaking you and your group. These hazards can cause temporary or permanent damage to the critical infrastructure of this nation. Therefore everyone should be a stakeholder in public safety and security of this nation. As a result, many are designing their first aid kits around temporary disaster events where there is a short recovery period, while others are preparing their kits for a total collapse of the system where medical resources will be hard to find.

Caution: for medical legal and health safety reasons-Disaster Preparers should think about:

  1. Preparing physically, mentally, and spiritually now to adapt to changes caused by impact of disasters and?continuity of civil and infastructure recovery.
  2. Familiarizing with their local, state and federal laws on the boundaries of giving care to humans, pets and livestock.
  3. Getting prior training on how to use the items in the first aid kit.
  4. Working as a trained and covenant group, not loner.
  5. Trying to get written certification or medical authority to perform certain procedures.
  6. Not going beyond their scope of practice or their medical certifications.
  7. Abiding by the local laws of what is allowed in your first aid or medical kit.
  8. (Personal, Force, Asset?Protection)Avoiding making themselves a target for thieves, murderers, drug addicts that use false emergency scenes or requests for help.

A first aid kit can be purchased at many stores, disaster preparedness organizations and online merchants. Medical supplies can also be purchased individually to build your own kit.? Some have also combined the two as one mitigation measure. Others have crafted their own replacement first aid products by improvising. They use tampons for bleeding, card board for splints, and other homemade items, or pet supplies for their kit?s inventory. The real issue is finding the right items and kit skin for your needs. There are many questionable claims to first kits such as the number of people that it can actually treat in an emergency, the quality, sterility and durability of items, the protective covering of the container or bag and excessive prices for minimal supplies. This is why it is vital to do a risk analysis and make appropriate mitigation decisions for your own needs from an all hazards approach.

Medical Supplies and their Skins

Medical supplies for a first aid kit can be put inside of a various items that are all weather resistant, waterproof, durable, floatable, not previously had any toxic or corrosive materials stored inside of it, and clearly marked as a first aid or medical kit. Ziploc bags and plastic trash bags can give extra all weather protection and longetivity of items. The kit should also be easy to carry with straps or handles, have reasonable space or compartments for medical items, and easy to open or secure during an emergency. The size and type of first aid emergency kit may be based on varied factors such as the personal needs of the individual, group, or community, different hazards, ?medical training, number of sick and injured, terrain, response time, life cycle of disaster, use with vehicles, walking distance, evacuation, and weather.

Examples:

  • Military Unfolding zippered Aid Bag M-3 & M-17
  • Military Chest with handles
  • Military Aid Station chest containers
  • Military hard plastic or metal containers
  • Nylon, Leather or Canvas Back Packs
  • Luggage with wheels and handle
  • Purse or designer bag
  • Lunch box
  • Square or rectangle storage containers
  • Tupperware containers
  • Plastic Ice Cream or used Food Containers
  • Hunting vests
  • Belt Pouches

A well-stocked and well maintained list of items in the first aid kit should be kept up to date at all times by rotating and replacing items.? A best practice for maintaining the mitigation investment of life saving equipment is doing inventory and preventative maintenance checks before and after using the kit. It can take place on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly cycle. ?The outside and inside of the emergency kit should be inspected for damage such as cracks, tears or holes. Mitigations measures such as health safety inspections for spoilage and expiration dates of items are important also.? However, some questions have been raised about keeping items regardless of expiration dates because of future scarcity of items during extreme disaster periods. These questions should be addressed by medical authorities who are expert in disasters and laws of the land. ?In any case, some items can lose their shelf life, sterility, durability, and may become toxic because of the hot storage temperatures. Another temperature issue is freezing. ?Solutions can freeze causing the containers to crack and break causing contamination of other items or damaging the first aid container.

The kit should work as expected: treat injuries and save life when you need it and cause no harm when it is not needed. It is vital to verify that the items consisting within the kit still function as expected, including the batteries in the medical equipment. The first aid kit should be stored in a place that is of the right temperature for medical supplies, in a safe location, away from pests, where no damage can occur, can be accessible to adults, but not to children or pets that can be poisoned and injured.

In summary, disasters can happen at anytime and anyplace. The consequences of not preparing for them may be immeasurable. To minimize this risk, it is vital to mitigate these impacts by building an emergency first aid kit based on analyzing, reducing, and insuring against future risks. It would be wise to assemble an emergency first aid kit that is adaptable and maintainable for your needs, take first aid classes, get familiarized with medical ? legal laws, learn how to take protective measures in emergency situations, and establish mutual-aid and covenant partnerships well in advance of an emergency situation. All of these steps help reduce the impact of hazards associated with future events and improve the chances of winning the war over disasters.? Americans, must remember that everyone is a stakeholder in public safety, God given freedoms, continuity of civil government,?and protecting the critical infastructure and key resources of this nation.

Jayawardene feels fifty-over World Cup victory trumps all ? Cricket News Update

While hoping to come up trumps in the upcoming series against Australia, Mahela Jayawardene, still reckons winning the fifty-over World Cup as his ultimate ambition before retiring.

The Lankans have an abysmal record Down Under, where they have failed to win a Test match since 1988. They last toured Australia for a Test-match series in 2007, and lost both clashes by comprehensive margins.

Having attained reasonable success during the Commonwealth Bank tri-series in Australia, the team will be aiming to achieve a maiden Test win in the forthcoming three-match series, which begins from December 14.

Jayawardene?s second stint as captain, which began during that series, has been promising to say the least, where his authoritative approach has allowed the team to recover well from the losses of key personnel in Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas.

However, there remain certain ambitions which have eluded the side and Jayawardene on a personal level. In his first spell as the skipper of the side, he led the team to Test wins against England and New Zealand but failed to guide them to World Cup glory in 2007, where they were beaten by eventual champions Australia.

In his current captaincy period, the team faced a major heartache after they lost the World T20 final on their own backyard in September this year. In total, he has been involved in 4 major global finals over the past five years (fifty-over and T20), and has been on the losing side on all four occasions.

While accepting the burning desire to get his hands on the global trophy, Jayawardene is further aiming to win a Test against Australia in Australia.

"Ask any international cricketer, winning a 50-over World Cup will be one of their priorities. That would always be my disappointment if I don't win a World Cup before I retire. Definitely winning a Test in Australia would be brilliant. We won a Test match in West Indies we've done that in South Africa, in New Zealand and in England. We haven't won a Test in Australia and India so we must try and get those two opportunities before I hang up."

Galaxy Gaming Publishes Open Letter to Bank of America OTCBB ...

LAS VEGAS, Dec. 4, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Galaxy Gaming, Inc. (OTC:GLXZ), the world's second largest developer, manufacturer and distributor of casino table games and enhanced casino systems, today published an open letter in the Charlotte Observer to Brian Moynihan, CEO of Charlotte-based Bank of America, urging Galaxy's former financial partner to cease its destructive litigation strategy and instead work to foster honorable consensus.

"We took this step because what Bank of America is doing through its lawsuits against our company is truly unfortunate, a rash and reckless decision that won't do anything to resolve our differences and let both sides get back to growing their business," said Robert Saucier, CEO of Galaxy Gaming.

The letter is in response to a lawsuit Bank of America filed against Galaxy in October.?The dispute stems from a commercial loan made in 2007 to a predecessor company that sold its assets to Galaxy.?As part of the purchase agreement, Galaxy agreed it would make payments directly to Bank of America on the prior companies loan, but Galaxy never intended nor agreed to assume the loan.?When the Las Vegas real estate market crashed, the collateral for the loan significantly decreased in value and Bank of America subsequently called the loan and demanded to be paid in full, even though Galaxy faithfully made all payments.?Bank of America then sued Galaxy for the full amount of the loan.?

"Needless to say, our loyalty was not returned," said Mr. Saucier.

The open letter mentions that Bank of America itself is being sued by the Department of Justice for more than $1 billion and accused of serious crimes by federal prosecutors.?This may explain why Bank of America has set aside as much as $42 billion in company assets strictly for litigation purposes.?Also mentioned is the fact that Mr. Moynihan's background is not banking or finance, but law and litigation.

"Menacing lawsuits can only contribute to suppressing potential growth, destroying good jobs and stifling the entrepreneurial spirit that B of A is supposed to support," said Saucier.?"Litigation ? whether against us or against B of A ? should always be a last resort and never a first option."

Opting to pursue agreement and not attack, Saucier is optimistic that the two companies ? despite their difference in size ? share an identical commitment to core business vales.

"I remain hopeful that Mr. Moynihan and his team at Bank of America will choose to remember and reassert one of their company's own "Core Values": We are aware that our decisions and actions affect people's lives every day.

The Open Letter may be viewed here: Galaxy Gaming website (www.galaxygaming.com) or here: Charlotte Observer website?(http://t.co/YwHh57pC)

North Korea urged to drop rocket launch plan

MOSCOW/BEIJING (Reuters) - Russia and China urged North Korea on Monday not to go ahead with a plan for its second rocket launch of 2012, with Moscow saying the launch would violate restrictions imposed by the U.N. Security Council.

North Korea's state news agency on Saturday announced the decision to launch another space satellite and reportedly told neighbors it would take a similar path to that planned for a failed rocket launch in April.

"We urgently appeal to the government (of North Korea) to reconsider the decision to launch a rocket," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Echoing its criticism of the April launch, Russia said North Korea had been warned not to ignore a U.N. Security Council resolution which "unambiguously prohibits (it) from launching rockets using ballistic technology".

China was not so direct in its criticism of North Korea, but urged "all sides" not to take any action that "worsens the problem".

"China believes that maintaining peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and in Northeast Asia accords with the interests of all sides and is the joint responsibility of all sides," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters.

"In the present circumstances, we hope all sides can be calm and restrained and not take any moves to worsen the problem. China will remain in touch and coordinate with all sides."

In Washington, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland condemned the launch plan on Sunday as a provocative threat to the Asia-Pacific region.

ELECTION IN SOUTH

North Korea says its rockets are used to put satellites into orbit for peaceful purposes. Russia said in its statement North Korea would be allowed only to exercise its right to peaceful activity in space if the U.N.-imposed restrictions were lifted.

The warnings come just weeks before South Korea's December 19 presidential election in which how to handle North Korea is a major campaign issue. The isolated North has for years tried to influence major events in the South by issuing propaganda or launching armed attacks.

North and South Korea have been technically at war since their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, and regional powers have for years been trying to rein in the North's nuclear program.

Countries trying to stop North Korea's arms program believe it is using rocket launches to perfect technology to build a missile arsenal capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the United States.

North Korea is under U.N. sanctions that ban trading in missile or nuclear technology that have driven its already dire economy deeper in trouble by cutting off what was once a lucrative source of hard cash.

Russia has often balanced criticism of Soviet-era client state North Korea's nuclear activities and missile launches with calls on other powers to refrain from belligerent actions against it, which Russia says can be counterproductive.

Russia is a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council and is upset by any defiance of council resolutions. Past launches by Pyongyang have caused concern among Russians living near the country's border with North Korea.
