Avril Lavigne and Brody Jenner: It's Over!

Avril Lavigne and Brody Jenner have said goodbye to their love.

The rocker and the former reality star have split after dating for almost two years, according to close sources. No word on what caused the split or what they're planning to do about the matching tattoos they got when they started dating.

Never, ever do that.

Brody Jenner and Avril Lavigne Pic

Jenner, whose romance with Lavigne began in early 2010, showed off a tattoo of the "Wish You Were Here" singer's name on his arm in July of that year.

Lavigne debuted her matching tattoo of Brody Jenner's name on her torso the same month while they were both cavorting around on the beach in Malibu.

True love. Hollywood style. Two years there is like 10 anywhere else, so this was more or less successful as relationships go. Sorry to see it end, though.

Jolie and Pitt grace the Globes in glamorous style (AP)

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt fully dressed their part as a glamorous Hollywood power couple at Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards: She in a body-hugging white strapless gown with a flash of red at the bustline by Atelier Versace that matched perfectly her lips and handbag, and he in a classic, bow-tie tuxedo by Salvatore Ferragamo.

Individually, they oozed old-school, movie-star looks, but together, they were the buzz of the red carpet at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., setting a high bar for style.

"There is mystery there. We know so much about everybody else that this couple is so exciting, and you love to see them," said stylist Mary Alice Stephenson. "They are so elegant ... and she's immaculate head to toe. She's so beautiful and icy, you love to watch her and you can't take your eyes off her."

Jolie led the march of stylish, seasoned veterans, who are mothers, moguls and ? on nights like these ? the best models around.

Stephenson called out Elle Macpherson in a strapless, tiered Zac Posen gown in ivory, Kate Beckinsale in a blush-colored beaded Roberto Cavalli, Reese Witherspoon in a red, corsetlike Posen, Nicole Kidman in a studded Versace and Salma Hayek in a bold, metallic Gucci.

Charlize Theron wore a dusty-rose colored gown by Christian Dior Couture with a plunging neckline, high slit and big bow on the waist, and Heidi Klum was in a plunging-back, blush-tone gown by Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein. She accented her look with a huge turquoise necklace.

"It's good for real women to see women who have a little age and maybe motherhood who can get their glam on in a very sexy way," Stephenson said.

Hal Rubenstein, fashion director for InStyle, noted the prevailing sophistication and elegance. "It's a very pretty night," he said. "Everybody wanted to look pretty and grown up. There wasn't a slashed skirt. There was an understanding that fashion isn't about being outrageous."

Among his favorites were Julianna Margulies in a purple caviar-beaded gown by Naeem Khan that showed off an open back.

Khan is one of Michelle Obama's go-to designers for formal occasions, and with open back and long sleeves from the designer's spring collection at the Golden Globe Awards. One of her other favorites, Jason Wu, made the leap to the West Coast, dressing Michelle Williams in a blue velvet gown.

Williams' biggest style statement, however, was her diamond garland headband by Fred Leighton for Forevermark.

The blue gown that surely turned some heads was the Vera Wang worn by Sofia Vergara. It was the mermaid silhouette that's becoming her signature, but the knife-pleated bodice and swirling sheared bias flange skirt were a little more fashion forward than the styles she's worn before.

Vergara said she so often wears Wang because of her gowns' fit: "She's like a genius now with my body."

There were some new names making bold fashion statements at the Globes, reassuring the next generation of style watchers. Jessica Chastain was at the ceremony for the first time wearing a high-neck, pearl-covered Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci. The details, down to her thin gold belt and pearl-and-diamond earrings, were just right.

Mila Kunis wore a one-shouldered black Dior. Her makeup artist Tracey Levy said she looked a bit like Elizabeth Taylor, but even more like "a brunette Grace Kelly."

"She looked classic Hollywood, but youthful ... with an innocence but also a grown woman who is confident," said Levy, who stuck to peach and coral Dior shades.

Zooey Deschanel wore a unique Prada dark-green halter gown with black and emerald glass pearls on the bodice and ivory pearls at the neck, and Rooney Mara, in a deep V-neck black gown with a bare, harness-style bodice. "It's a Nina Ricci and it was the first one I tried on," Mara said. "It was very comfortable."

Rubenstein thought Mara is playing her cards right in introducing herself to a broader audience. "She's doing a very savvy bridge between personal style and the character she plays in `Dragon Tattoo.'"

First-timer Octavia Spencer wore a lavender, draped gown by Tadashi with a V neck and jeweled details. "We wanted to create something Grecian that highlighted her curves and vibrant personality," said Shoji in a statement.

Rubenstein noted how many women went the purple route, including Emma Stone in Lanvin, Jessica Alba in Gucci and Shailene Woodley in an embroidered illusion column dress by Marchesa.

Lea Michele wore one of the beaded, under-the-sea fantasy frocks from Marchesa's spring runway.

Madonna, whose style has been all over the map in her long career, went back to her rock `n' roll roots for this event wearing a dark green embroidered gown with cap sleeves by Reem Acra and a diamond-and-pearl cross by Neil Lane.

"I love it because I feel like I'm wearing chain mail and I'm ready to go to battle," said Madonna.

Claire Danes took a very modern turn in a graphic black-and-white J. Mendel gown with an open back, and Kate Winslet did the opposites-attract thing in a Jenny Packham gown with a black hammered silk satin bodice and ivory silk crepe skirt.

"There was not a real miss, definitely nothing cataclysmic," said Rubenstein. "Those days of big goofs are few and far between now. People are too smart, their stylists are too smart ? and they all have good relationships with designers."

Dallas: We Never Wanted to Remake the Original (omg!)

After 21 years and one of the biggest TV cliff-hangers of all time, Dallas returns to TV this June on TNT. Just don't call the new series a reboot or a remake.

"I couldn't imagine making a remake. We've seen it. There were 357 episodes," Dallas executive producer Cynthia Cidre told reporters Saturday at TNT's winter TV previews. "It just seemed natural to catch up with Ewing family 20 years later."

When we return to Southfork, Bobby Ewing is happily re-married ? to Desperate Housewives' Brenda Strong! -- and his adopted son, Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe) is desperate to push the Ewing family into a new, more environmentally minded direction away from oil. However, J.R.'s son, John Ross (Josh Henderson), has very different ideas about the family business. In case you were worried that the new Dallas would lack conflict, John Ross' girlfriend Elena (The Fast and the Furious' Jordana Brewster) is also Christopher's ex-fianc?e. "[The script] honored all of the intricate elements of what Dallas was in the past, and basically, we've dropped back in 20 years later," executive producer Michael M. Robin said. "The storytelling elements are similar."

TNT releases dramatic new Dallas trailer

So how did producers lasso original stars Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray and Larry Hagman? "Work at 80. How many people do you know working at 80? And a job that they love with the people that they love," said Hagman, who told the crowd that his current cancer treatments are "going along very well."

And unlike other revamped series (? la Tori Spelling's blink-and-you-missed-it cameo on the new 90210), the returning original cast members aren't just back for nostalgia. "[The plan] was really to integrate them fully with the new cast. "It's not two separate storylines," Cidre said. "So far we've been in every episode, unless Cynthia and Mike have plans we don't know about," Duffy said, who said he's left his infamous shower-scene days behind him for the new kids. "The younger people have more stamina and they have a function in the show, but we're here."

(When asked about the chances of more returning characters, particularly Bobby Ewing's ex-wife Pam (Victoria Principal), producers sounded open to the idea should the series take off. "I don't know yet," Cidre said. "We create it one season at a time and hopefully we'll get a second season.")

Keck's Exclusives: TNT's Dallas to serve up more Lucy and Ray

Although Metcalfe, Henderson and the rest of the newbies won't have that same familiarity with audiences as the returning vets, they're not worried about winning over the fans. "Our characters are defined by who they are. Every bit of who Christopher is is part of Bobby, and the same with John Ross and J.R.," Metcalfe said. "We're the next generation that's carrying those timeless themes" of greed and love.

So how will producers make sure nothing overlaps with the series' original run? There's always someone watching. "From the beginning, I never wanted to violate anything that had actually happened," Cidre said. "Whenever we are making a choice in the present, someone is researching all 357 episodes. We want to honor the original show and the original conception."

So far it seems the team isn't having too hard of a time coming up with new material. "After 13 years, she gave me my first slap," Hagman teased about Gray. "You weren't supposed to hear that," she added, "but it was great!"

Will you watch the new Dallas?

Peru court sentences Van der Sloot to 28 years (AP)

LIMA, Peru ? A Peruvian court on Friday sentenced Joran van der Sloot to 28 years in prison for murder of a young woman he met at a Lima casino, even as the family of U.S. teenager Natalee Holloway sought to have him prosecuted in the U.S. over her disappearance in 2005.

The decision comes two days after the young Dutchman pleaded guilty to killing Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old business student.

The court also ordered him to pay $75,000 in reparations to the victim's family, deeming the killing "cruel" and "ferocious."

Van der Sloot showed no emotion as the court clerk read the sentence, describing how he elbowed Flores in the face then beat and strangled her with his bloodied shirt. He told the court he would appeal the sentence.

It is the first ever imposed on him, despite prosecutors' repeated efforts to prove he was involved in Holloway's apparent death on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba.

The judges said that due to time already served, van der Sloot's sentence would end in June 2038. But under Peru's penal system, Van der Sloot could become eligible for parole after serving half of the sentence with good behavior, including work and study.

The prosecution had sought a 30-year sentence for first-degree murder and theft.

Van der Sloot's lawyer argued he killed Flores on May 30, 2010, in a fit of rage he blamed on psychological trauma from being hounded as the prime suspect in Holloway case.

The victim's father, Ricardo Flores, complained after the sentencing that Van der Sloot was living well in a Lima prison, where he has been set apart from the general population.

"A jail isn't a five-star hotel," Ricardo Flores told reporters. "Let's hope the authorities take that into account and not just in our case."

"Since the first day we've been complaining about the excessive privileges" that Van der Sloot allegedly enjoyed in jail. He said he would present evidence of that at a news conference on Monday.

Unconfirmed news reports, denied by penal authorities, say Van der Sloot has also had a television and video gaming console. As in many developing nations, foreigners with money can buy superior treatment in Peru's prisons.

The Holloway case remains open and a U.S. judge on Thursday declared her dead.

Her parents want Van der Sloot to eventually be extradited to the U.S. and tried on related charges, although Peruvian criminal law expert Luis Lamas said the law specifies that Van der Sloot must serve his time before he can be extradited.

Van der Sloot was indicted on extortion charges in Alabama the same day he was arrested for the Flores murder for allegedly accepting $25,000 in return for a promise to lead a lawyer for Holloway's mother to her daughter's remains.

Van der Sloot didn't deliver on the offer, and may have used some of that money to fly to Peru two weeks before the Flores murder.

After killing the Lima woman, he took nearly $300 in cash from Flores as well as credit cards, and was captured four days later in Chile.

Van der Sloot told police he flew into a rage when she discovered his connection to Holloway via an instant message sent to him while they were playing online poker in his hotel room.

Police forensic experts disputed that story, and the three female judges who sentenced him noted that Van der Sloot later recanted the confession, claiming it was exacted under duress and without an official translator.

The victim's family contends Van der Sloot killed Flores in order to rob her.

The imposing young man raised on a tourist island has been a staple of tabloids and true crime TV, as well as the subject of several books about Natalee Holloway.

"We've been dealing with her death for the last six and a half years," her father, Dave Holloway, said after Thursday's hearing in Birmingham, Alabama.

He said the judge's order there on his daughter's death closes one chapter in the ordeal, but added: "We've still got a long way to go to get justice."

Natalee Holloway, an 18-year-old from the wealthy Birmingham suburb of Mountain Brook, disappeared on May 30, 2005, during a high school graduation trip to Aruba, where Van der Sloot grew up.

Her body was never found and repeated searches turned up nothing even as intense media coverage brought the case worldwide attention.

Van der Sloot said he was involved in her disappearance in a videotape clandestinely made by a Dutch journalist. He later denied it, however, and has told several interviewers that he is a pathological liar.

A homicide investigation into Holloway's death remains open in Aruba though there has been no recent activity, said Solicitor General Taco Stein, an official with the prosecutor's office in Aruba.

There is no indication U.S. officials have moved to seek to extradite Van der Sloot; Peru's Foreign Ministry said this week that it has no U.S. extradition request for him.

No members of Van der Sloot's family attended the trial in Peru. His lawyer said the defendant's mother, Anita, did not want the media attention.

The defendant's father, a prominent lawyer, died of a heart attack at age 57 in February 2010.

I hope that I can get along with you folks out there.

If I could give you people free cookies to bribe you with, I would but technology has not yet advanced to the stage where we can deliver real things across the information highway.

Qualcomm Halo wireless charging concept eyes-on

Let's run through the fundamentals of wireless charging: floor-mounted electromagnets pump out EM waves to your EV's engine to absorb. This means ripping up the floor to install and precisely driving your whip over the exact spot. There's no efficiency loss between wireless and wired charging, in case you were wondering. We got to speak to Qualcomm's Joe Barrett as he walked us through the chip foundry's innovative approach to the technology that it picked up from the University of Auckland. The Halo is a 28mm plate that can reportedly push 3.3kW/h to your vehicle without requiring it to park it precisely over the unit. The company's not talking about vertical range, but did insist that it would charge an SUV, so we can assume it'll travel at least a foot off the ground. The company is planning to foster an open standard for the technology through licensing and has joined the three-year design cycle that modern cars undergo -- with an expectation that we'll see the first commercial models of the technology surfacing in 2014, which you can just lay on the floor of your garage. A 50 unit trial led by Chargemaster and Polar is currently underway under the names of your favorite tier-one automaker.

Murder knocked off list of top U.S. killers: CDC (Reuters)

CHICAGO (Reuters) ? A respiratory illness that strikes the elderly knocked homicide off the list of the top killers in the United States for the first time in 45 years in 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Wednesday.

In its annual report on U.S. mortality, the CDC said a condition known as pneumonitis had replaced murder as a leading cause of death in the country.

The drop in deaths by homicides was expected. Last month, the FBI released a preliminary report on U.S. crime rates for 2010 that showed a 7.1 percent drop in murder between January and June, part of a wider drop in violent crime despite the country's ongoing economic troubles.

The drop in murder rates -- and a corresponding rise in pneumonitis -- forced homicide off the government's annual list of top 15 killers for the first time since the mid-1960s. Murder was relegated to 16th place in 2010 with 16,065 killings.

Average life expectancy in the United States rose slightly in 2010, to 78.7 years from 78.6 in 2009, the CDC said. In order to reach that age, Americans had to dodge a litany of potential killers, top among them heart disease and cancer.

Of the more than 2.4 million deaths the health agency studied, the top 15 killers in 2010 were:

1. Heart disease (595,444 deaths)

2. Malignant neoplasms (573,855)

3. Chronic lower respiratory diseases (137,789)

4. Cerebrovascular diseases (129,180)

5. Accidents (118.043)

6. Alzheimer's disease (83,308)

7. Diabetes (68,905)

8. Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis (50,472)

9. Influenza and pneumonia (50,003)

10 Suicide (37,793)

11. Septicemia (34,843)

12. Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis (31,802)

13. Essential hypertension and hypertensive renal disease (26,577)

14. Parkinson's disease (21,963)

15. Pneumonitis due to solids of liquids (17,001)

Age-adjusted death rates for nine of the 15 leading killers, including influenza and pneumonia, septicemia and cancer, fell in 2010, the CDC said. But age-adjusted death rates for six, including Parkinson's disease and pneumonitis, rose.

Age-adjustment accounts for the impact of rising life over time.

Infant mortality fell 3.9 percent in 2010 to 6.14 infant deaths per 1,000 births from 6.39 deaths per 1,000 births in 2009.
